I do agree with you but the styles and the writing is always being done as per what your instructor wants you to put on your paper.
Else if it is not mentioned which way you need to do it, then of course you would need to do it as per the Chicago way of writing and referencing.

As a history student, its my understanding that you should always follow the chicago citation method.
